The Getaway: Food, Sport, Rejuvenation, Massage Burlington VT

17-Feb-2015

Burlington, Vermont has become a getaway for Montréalers, New Yorkers and Bostonians. It has been for decades for the skiers and backpackers looking to enjoy great peaks and waterways. But why would urbanites seek out a small city in this rural state? Panache. This quaint, walkable city sports a 7-mile bike/running path along the massive Lake Champlain shoreline with views of the Adirondacks and dotted by public beaches and public facilities (this connects with the Quebéc Verte Bikeway which goes into Montréal). And who would have thought of sailing when talking of Vermont. Burlington’s harbor attracts boaters of all stripes: fishermen, canoeists, power boaters and sailors.

If you’re looking to explore beyond the waterfront, within a short walk is the downtown center including a 4-block pedestrian zone known as Church Street. This is a mecca for locals and tourists alike, bustling with cafés, boutiques, art and craft galleries. During the Summer, street performers entertain along this busy thoroughfare; Acrobats, jazz musicians, puppetiers and world-traveled merry-makers call this home.

Vermont has a long tradition of farm-based food products and is internationally recognized for its craft beers, artisan breads and cheeses. Local farms produce grass-fed beef, lamb and pork supplying local restaurants with fresh ingredients from the surrounding Champlain Valley. The state’s capital, Montpelier, is home to the New England Culinary Institute which has honed the talent of many local chefs. Needless to say, Burlington and the surrounding area has a wide variety of restaurants, many of which focus on farm-to-table cuisine.

While you’re unwinding, the Champlain Valley is home to many massage therapists and bodyworkers. Nothing is more invigorating after a day of skiing or bike riding than a deep tissue massage. The Stowe Mountain resort is home to world renowned spas and cater to skiers and those wanting a resort scene.

Montréal is only a 75-minute car ride from Burlington, and the local airport has daily direct jet shuttles to NYC, Boston and Chicago. Come see why Burlington, the Queen City, has earned its regal title.
